Where to start
good afternoon all I have recently purchased a 94 mustang GT 60,000 miles. The car is in good shape however the motor is a little rough the poor car has not been brought up to operating temerature or highway speeds for the last 2 years the man I purchased it from has used the car soley for a short 5 minute trip to work for the last 2 years. I had it up around 65-75 for about 2 hours and alot of black smoke was pouring out the more I ran it the better it responded however it is not 100%. I started with a good intake cleaning both upper and lower as well as a new K&n cold air intake. I put the synthetic lubricants in as well as flushed the radiator and refilled with antifreeze 50/50 and water wetter. The issues I am currently having is the transmission was rebuilt 3 years ago and the opinion of the Mechanic that did the work was that the tranny wasn't the problem he recomended an electrical service however it was never specified what electrical service on the service records and the owners incisted upon the rebuild apparently more money than brains. The transmission likes to jump gears for no reason it is a rare accurance but frustrating none the less. I see a leak at the filler hose to the gas tank a drop of gas here and there but enough to stink up the trunk and interior. The car is sometimes hard to start and the fuell pump on occasion makes a high piched whine. The idle is smoothe which amased me however every so often I feel what seems to be a miss. Well thats it for a start I welcome any advice you guys and gals may have.
Well the fuel pump makes a whining noise so I wouldnt say thats a problem, unless its flat out loud but with 60K miles it should be ok. As far as the starting goes maybe new battery but I would check cables and battery terminals for corosion. Im not sure about the jumping gears thing maybe someone with some knowledge of auto trannys will help you with that.
Thanks I never even bothered to check under those terminal covers and have a look. The fuel pump whine varries in tone sometimes it has a normal cinsisn=tant whine then goes to a higher pitch for a few seconds then back to normal. I wonder if the battery is bad and it is a possibility it looked stock I wonder if the electronics are starving for electricity.
The fuel pump is probably working fine. Turn your car to the on position but dont start it and listen. You should hear the fuel pump kick on. If the battery says Motorcraft on it then I would say thats probably the original battery. Sometimes they just die on you. I just recently had to go help one of my buddies out because his car wouldnt start and he ended up needing a new battery because his other one decided it didnt want to hold a charge anymore. I would say its probably the battery causeing the hard start. Its probably just not be working under a load. Any other questions just post.
Thanks I am going to go ahead and replace the battery. Any info on possibly having the plugs rotor and wires replaced the service manual doesn't recomend this til 100,000 miles however there was an awful lot of crap coming out of the pipes at first. Also assuming the engine may be a little carboned up due to the minimal use is there any other sensors I may need to replace.
