Default Coolant leak

Just picked up a 2000 Gt with 4.6 and it has 136,000 miles, the previous owner said it smoked like a diesel. Got it home checked fluids and coolant tank was empty, added 2.5 gallons of coolant. Got the car to start and it ran fine until it got to temperature and it would start steaming out the tailpipe and start running rough. So I believe it has a blwn head gasket, but what I don't know is why there is coolant underneath the intake. It has the upgraded aluminum coolant passage on the intake and from what I can see the tube on back of the water pump is not leaking. I have since pulled the heads and since #3 plug was wet I thought there was my problem but as I inspected the head gasket it doesn't look like it was blown. Any info would be helpful.
