So as you add more parts to your car, can you adjust the tune for them yourself. Or do you need to like send it in or something?

You can have a custom tune developed by e-mail if you so choose and have it modified as you add performance mods. The hand held units themselves generally only allow for modifications to the tune across very broad rpm ranges.

Dyno tuning uses a flash tuner.
He was talking about a handheld. Not tuning the car with a dyno and a laptop.
To clarify a dyno tune could be downloaded to his vehicle via a handheld.

They really seem to be a waste of money. I was just over at the dyno the other day and there was a guy with a Vette there. He just bought a $400 handheld. I don't recall what brand. But after they went through the tune it turns out he actually lost 3 hp with the tuner. For the same money, you can have it dyno tuned which is WAY more effective. You may not see a huge increase in peak power, but you'll pick up power all the way though the power band.

Wouldn't the lack of gains be due to a bad tuner, not the unit itself?

This has gotten so far off track here. Let's narrow down the actual tune we are talking about. A handheld diablosport type tuner, or actually tuning a car on a dyno. The correct way, with a laptop and SCT or similar software.

Which way are we talking about?

I am refering to a dyno (or custom) tune developed with Diablo CMR software or SCT software based on dyno and datalogging results for a specific vehicle, which is then transferred to the Predator or XCal 2 to be downloaded into the vehicle's ECU. The pre-loaded tunes that come with a Predator or XCal 2 are probably safe to use without tweaking in a mildly modded vehicle, but are not as safe or as effective as a dyno tune.

Well, I noticed a nice diference with the Diablo. Now that I am getting the gears installed next Monday, I'm gonna remap the F/I and tweak the tranny. I love the DiabloSport Tuner!
