Default Hello and input please

Hey there everyone, I have an opportunity to purchase a 1997 Mustang LX convertible and was hoping to get a little input from you all. It's green/tan with dual exhaust and about 140,000 miles. The body is in excellent condition and includes 15's and 17's. The guy is a friend of a friend and is willing to let it go for $1,500. The price is way below blue book but with the miles I was wondering if there are any issues besides head gaskets that I should know about. I'm a devoted Nissan guy myself but love mustangs!! I'd just like to know what sort of common motor issues I could be getting into. Thanks in advance for your help!

You can probably expect worn rings... so it may burn a bit of oil. Thats a steal though.

Also, you may run into problems with your drive line, specifically the transmission. If your going to be commuting in it, Id pull it and have it looked at, tolerances checked, and new seals put in.

You will also have the other smaller stuff, but that all depends on hwo well the car was maintained... Water pump, tires, brakes, fluids etc.

by LX, I assume you mean a six cylinder?

That car has alot of miles on it so you can expect the usual high mileage car problems.....which could be just about anything but if it runs well and looks good, I'd say go for it. Those sixxers will run forever.

Thanks for the input guys, and thank you for moving this for me RockthePony. I mainly just want to buy this car to have something fun to drive. I have a Nissan Frontier that I love, but it's not the most exciting ride in the world. I have built a couple hotrods and trucks from scratch and can handle whatever this stang needs, I just wanted to get a feel for what common problems the 6ers have. Thanks again for the help guys!!!

Just wanted to post a quick update. Just got the car back from Cleveland, about a 200 mile trip. She died about 3 mles from home. The motor wasn't getting fuel and when I called the previous owner, he said he had never replaced the filter. It finally got going again after a half dozen weak attempts. I guess I'll go ahead and change out the filter tomorrow and see how that helps!

D'OH! Never replaced the fuel filter? JESUS! One other thing you might want to check on such a high milage car. the U-JOINTS! Don't want to do a pole vault!

Good point on the u-joints. I'm going to flush the coolant, change the diff fluid, change the tranny filter and pan gasket and replace the fuel filter tomorrow. Aside from that, the only other pressing issue is the fact that the exhaust dumps straight from the cats. She's LOUD!!!!! The guy put on a 2003 GT's exhaust, but the section right behind the h-pipe rusted and fell out, so I need to get that patched up so it'll stop blowing the O2 code. It gave me a P0131 and a P1131. The P0131 was for both banks for the O2 sensor circuit. the P1131 was a manufacturer specific dtc, so I'm still researching that trying to figure it out. Aside from the noise and the last 3 miles though, it was a fun trip! I'm looking forward to working on this car.

The P1131 will disapear when you take care of the other codes. I HATE those damn things. The dealer usually doesn't even know what they are. Or won't tell you..one or the other.
