Default MY NEW ENGINE IS ACTING FUNNY!

I just built my engine. New Edelbrock Performer heads, Edel. Performer intake, rings, E303 cam, FRPP full roller 1.6 rockers............... I checked for vacume leaks and made shure everything is conected right.>>>>>>>HERE IS THE PROBLEM<<<<<<<<< The engine runs but seems like it is missing some timing somewhere. " I adjusted the timing on the distributor ". It olso is over heating after about 4 min. of idle time. Im pretty damn shure I put the head gaskes on the right way with the water jacket holes faceing the correct side. I lacks alot of power after putting a load on the engine. It sounds like Im off a tooth with the timing chain but I know I put that thing on top dead center when I installed it ( Is there any way to tell that I am off a tooth, other than putting it on top dead center and seeing if the push rods turn loosley? ). What the hell can be wrong????? Please help me!!!! Thank you for taking your time to help........................... Andrew

When you adjusted the timing, did you retard it or advance it?

I set the timing to about 12 deg. advance. I did'nt advance the chain nor retard it by 4 deg.. I dont understand the over heating problem and the lack of power when I put a load on the engine. I bought a new thermostat and water pump so thats not the problem. I was told it sounds like Im a tooth off on the timing chain, how can I tell??? ~Andrew

my teacher who has a 5.0 said you have your distributor too advanced. when u do it top dead center, has to be on #1 cylinder. and check fuel pressure.

12 degrees base shouldn't be too much time.
