Gear and back end question
Can anyone help me with my darn mustang? I have a question and need advice. I have a '98 Mustang GT that has been making a whopping noise in the rear end. My friend (who is also a mechanic) originally thought it was the rear end wheel bearing on driver's side, but when he took it apart, he found that the bearings were fine but the gears were worn out. He said it looks as if something was changed at one time. He said since it would be so costly to replace the gears, he said to get a used one at the junk yard and put it in. I don't know why I want to do this, instead I was going to try and price it. What do I tell them I need when i check on parts? Also, he said that my car was good for another 10 - 12k miles, but it would continue to make this annoying noise and would continue to be a gas hog. Does this sound right? Can worn out gears make this kind of noise? Any help or feedback is greatly appreciate. Thank you..
