Default Ticking/Clicking Noise

While I was driving trying to keep up with my friend tonight on the way to his house I heard a loud ticking/clicking noise comming from the car when I nailed the gas. I have heard this same noise very quietly when ideling or next to a wall, but tonight just that one time it became very loud when hitting the gas hard. My friend had an exhaust leak around his exhaust manifold and it sounded similar to this noise. He drives a 2002 V6 Mustang. Any chance it could be the same problem, or something worse.

Thanks for any feedback.

it could be your lifters, or maybe even the tranny. When your next to a wall again and you hear that noise, try stepping on the clutch and see if it stops, release it and see if the noise returns.

I drive an automatic, so I can't push in a clutch to see if it happens. So any other way to make that work?

Yeah I have checked the oil lately...I am really good at changing the oil at 3,000 miles or right around it because of the way I drive the car.

As I was leaving a friends house tonight I heard the ticking/clicking noise as I was driving, I would say no faster than 20. When I put the car in Nuetral as I was still moving the sound got a little softer but I still heard it. Hope this helps a bit more.
