Default transmission leak?

New guy. New to me 1999 v6 auto. When I picked it up today, I had to add three quarts of ATF to get it to move. Son said it works good and doesn't leak if it is driven regularly, but when parked for long periods (greater than 2 weeks) it will leak a puddle under the car. Seems to be coming from the fill tube seal. Can it leak 3 qt from the tube seal? Seems like it would be below the seal way before the 3qt leaks.

Welcome to the forum!

I'm not an auto tranny expert but I did stay at a Holiday Inn Express last year and can safely tell you that a transmission should not leak a quart; let alone three bloody quarts. Not only is that bad for your car but its bad for your bank account and the environment. I would get under my car and look for a possible source and/or head to the dealer.

you need to replace the o ring on the dipstick tube, then.......... no more leak.

Yeah, there is an o-ring that seals the dipstick tube into the transmission housing. It’s likely leaking. The normal fluid level is higher then the whole for the dip stick tube, so its not surprising that it leaks from there. My wifey’s ’98 Mustang had a similar leak. I tried to replace it with an o-ring I had handy and it leaked worse. So I picked one up from the dealer. No leaks after 2+ years. Good luck...
