Default Rear end questions

I have a question so here is the scenario

I have a 02 v6 obviously a 7.5, now I have a 98 8.8 rear that I want to put under it. I have the gear set I want which is 3.73. The axles count 28 spline but my new pinion counts 30....I counted 4 times using a marker. They are from ford racing and they are ten bolt.

Am I missing something? Or does the piece that locks the pinion in place come in 30? I know ford is 28 and 31

American muscle can't really help, ford racing won't help because they go by part number.

The pinion doesn’t have splines and doesn’t come in direct contact with the axles. Do you mean the spider/side gears? Those are the gears that the axles slide into. If so, you can purchase replacement spider gears with the number of spines that fit your axle shafts. Good luck...

Since when does it not have splines? Ever since I have ordered them you have to order by gear size, rear end size and spline count. Im going a different direction any way now. I'm keeping the 7.5 and selling the 8.8

The pinion gear is the one that essentially bolts up to the driveshaft. There are no splines on the pinion. Or you you meaning the actual gear teeth ?

Maybe we're not understanding you, but petcock gave a pretty good explanation.

Then what is this? When I talked to American muscle we talked about the pinion spline count. The driveshaft itself has splines that go to the transmission.

And thanks for the pic Kaleb, that helps a lot. Those splines mate to the U-joint housing, that gets bolted to the driveshaft. I'm not that familiar with the 7.5, but if your swapping to the 8.8, a quick Google search will tell you if you need to keep your old housing to put on the 8.8, but I wouldn't think you would need to, unless the 8.8 runs a bigger u-joint. Which makes sense now lol. Good luck

The 7.5 and 8.8 use a different Pinion Yoke. The 8.8 pinion yoke is slightly larger than the 7.5.
