Default Rack & pinion leak..

I saw yesterday the passenger side rubber boot on my '02 GT rack & pinion steering assembly is leaking fluid, it must have a rip in it or something [:@]

Is this easy to fix? Just replace the rubber boot with a new one?

The boot is just a dust cover. You can replace it, but the leak will still be there. You need to replace the seal. If you've never done one, I don't recommend you try it. Take it to someone who knows what they are doing.

Ok thanks. So, this seal can be replaced and not have to swap out the whole rack & pinion?

I had noticed my power steering fluid level had dropped a bit in the past couple weeks,, guess I know found out where the fluid was going

some times it is easier to replace the rack it really depends on what is leaking but it does need fixed.

Well I stopped by the dealer today.. He says the whole rack&pinion needs to be replaced without even looking at what's wrong,, just from hearing me describe that fluid is leaking from the passenger side boot..

Hey gu-esstimates it will be around $500-600 (Canadian!) for them to do the work [:@]

If the whole rack needs to be replaced, I'm thinking to just go grab a rebuilt unit & do it myself!! How much of a pain in the **** is swapping out a rack&pinion assembly? Any "special" tools needed above the basic wrenches/sockets etc?
