Default SHUDDER GOING IN REVERSE

My 2005 V8 started this shudder when first going in reverse. It does not do it when going forward. Any suggestions?

your trans is a 5r55, they have known issues with band servo case wear. your symptom is consistent with an internal band/servo issue

it should be fine to drive, the issues is usually caused by case wear, the cases can be repaired, but you are looking at a trans rebuild most likely

I've been driving mine for over 3 years now.

Best thing to do is start the car and put it in reverse right away. Mine goes in fine.

I thought that (shudder) was only for forward gears? The reverse shudder is usually the reverse servo sticking. To access it you just need to drop the pan, pull it out (four bolts) and rebuild it or replace it.

I believe what you're talking about are the 2-4 servo and OD servo on the side of the transmission?

Not saying you're wrong but if the reverse band or servo/case wear issue is a possibility for reverse, it's not a very common from everything I've researched and my own limited experience.

you are correct sir, but i have had very few apart that had reverse problems, when inspected further didnt show significant servo wear for the other bands. maybe she will get lucky, but 99% of 5r55's with shift quality concerns of any kind will require a rebuild.

Yeah I hear you. Pretty much every 5r55s with 60K plus needs a rebuild due to the servo case wear issue.

IDK if you guys have tried this in your shop or if you would even consider it since it's not "ford approved" but, considering Ford's solution is use Brass (another soft metal) sleeve for the case which will wear out too, I just figure this is a more cost effective solution that will probably last as long.

I haven't had any shifting issues with mine at almost 80K. I tend to drive with OD off around town unless I hit the freeway or am driving for any extended distance over 60 mph.

we usually sell remans due to the 3 year unlimited mileage warranty that comes with it, and due to the fact that the reman labor costs more. but one guy i work with does side work and uses that kit to repair them, he likes it and says it works well.

how many miles do you have on the car? and did you ever do a transmission flush? I just recently did a flush at 50k and my car seems a lot better now! the manual actually recommends to do it every 30k miles, as it is a sealed system with no way to check the fluid, and these transmissions are known to be very sensitive to burnt and broken down fluid, and especially in the summer time, that fluid gets really hot!!
