Default Oil Leak

I went and looked at my car at the body shop today, they just finished the paint and it looks geat! But they told me its leaking oil, and a lot of it too. He said it looks like its been leaking for awhile but i never noticed it until the accident and i had my oil changed about a month ago and they said it was fine. He told me it wa leaking from a main seal...idk, and i was wondering if anyone knows what that is and how much it would cost to fix if the insurance dont cover it.

I think he's talking about the rear main seal between the engine and transmission. I believe about the only way to fix that is to drop the transmission.

Ya might just wanna check and take your car to an actual mechanic's shop instead of going on what the guy at the body shop said. I'm not knocking what he's saying b/c he might know his stuff, but i don't know if i'd go on too much of what he says....could be something simple. But yeah, i think w/ the main seal you have to drop the tranny to get to it(atleast that's what my friend had to do w/ his honda-even though its a completely different car)

Did you get hit in the front so that the crankshaft took part of the hit?If so,this could be what caused the leak and should be covered by insurance. The crank and rods could be kinked a little bit.Could the leak be coming from the trans?

I would be saying that it didn't leak before so they better be fixing it.

Usually you can tell if it's an old or new leak by looking at it anyway.

Well i never noticed it leaking before, and i had my oil changed less than a month ago and it wasnt leaking then so ill show them the reciet if they argue.

My car was sort of hit in the front, the plow hit my left rear and then my front left fender, smashed it up real good.

Hope you have better luck than I did. Had the harmonic balancer pulley break and while it was in a Pontiac dealer for extended warrenty repair they fixed my leaking rear main. Got it back with a tranny leak, wasn't leaking before the main seal replacement. They fixed that and the rear main was still leaking, said it was defective after they replaced it. Got the stang back with a shuddering engine. They apparenetly didn't support the engine correctly when they pulled the tranny, broke the engine mount. They replaced both mounts and then the stang had a tranny leak. The idiots popped the filler/dipstick tube out of the tranny when they jacked up the engine to replace engine mounts. They repaired that, and now in less than 5000 miles I have both a tranny leak and rear main leak. Thank goodness the extended warrenty is dead so they won't try to repair crap again. The tranny is leaking because the idiots put in Dextrol instead of ATF and it apparently breaks down ford's seals/gaskets.

So word of advice find a good shop.
