Default convertible heavier?

Are convertibles usually heavier than their coupe counterparts? I was installing an amp in my convertible and when I took my rear seats out I saw my convertible motor. That thing is tiny and doesn't look like it weighs much. I am wondering why would a convertible be so heavy when there is so much dead space in the back.

absolutely...and a lot more too.

not exactly apples to apples, but my '88 and '89 notchbacks weighed about 3200 w/ me in them, and my '90 lx 'vert was 3600 w/ me in it.

They are heavier due to the extra reinforcment needed in the frame. You see, a roof adds a great deal of structure to a car, take that away and the rest of the car needs to be beefed up.

exactly, on the early cars, EVERYRHING was different, and the extra braces were even under the hood, on a FOX, there was even a factory K-member brace

YEs, the verts are a good deal heavier. THey are because the lack of roof requires more frame components. The frame has to be beefed up because the roof is an important component of keeping the car together. They are heavier and most times approx. .5 sec slower than an identical coupe.

dont know about slips, but car and driver clocked the 05 vert at the same quarter and .1 sec faster to 60, they have a smaller difference though of only 150 lbs, normally, especially on older cars its around 300 lbs.

darn! and I always thought my car was faster than the coupes 0-60 because I weighed less! guess it's the other way around.

Time to get myself on the atkins diet...
