Default using the Steptronic

So, is there anybody using the Steptronic like a manual? I dunno, seems like a bad idea altogether to mix this into an American muscle car; but I have one so I'm wondering how you all'zz is using it.

Steptronic?? I think you've been hoodwinked... someone may have told you that you were buying a Mustang, but sold you a lowly BMW instead. Probably an M5 or something. Take it back immediately and demand satisfaction.

Seriously though, there is no manumatic in a Mustang. If you're referring to the 3-2-1, that's a pretty classic setup. I don't have one now, but I had one in an old Firebird. I've noticed them shifting it on the Charger in Dukes of Hazzard. I actually prefer this much more than a manumatic. I've been using Audi's tiptronic for a few years and what frequently gets me is that I know I want to downshift to get ready to come out of a turn, but the computer also senses it's time to downshift around the same time, and I end up going down 2 gears instead of 1. With the 3-2-1 system you just specify the highest gear and let the auto choose the gears below as appropriate. For example, on a residential street with round-abouts, speed-bumps, or such, it might be nice to just keep it in "3" to keep the throttle response up and not have to wait for shifts. Likewise maybe "2" for parking lots.

It is OK for the tranny.... I pull mine down into 3 on steep downhill runs sometimes to get the engine to hold back my car.

It is NOT good for the tranny to yank it into 1st at 67mph however !

Even Worse to put it into [R]ace at 69mph either!

You know... they are Manual... They pick a gear and stay there...

If they were Womanual, they wouldn't be able to decide what gear to go in! AND - they would change their mind at any given moment so you would never know what gear you were in.

I know -- that was bad.... but... that popped into my head and so I just HAD to post it!
