Default 3.73 or 4.10 Noobie question.

Hey, im new to this forum and need some help. Im sorry if this has been answered several times before but i couldnt find anything with the search option.

I own an 06' GT Automatic Coupe. Which will give me better performance being that i have 5-speed auto and not manual? And does it change the gas mileage much? if so how much ? Oh also, is it hard to install myself, or how much would it cost to have installed. Thanks a lot!

I think the auto guys are mostly running 3.73's. Stick guys 4.10's

I am sticking with the 3.55's for now. Because in case I go supercharged, thats the gear I want.

The 373 seems to be the best for the autos because for the auto, you go from 331 to 373; so its a descent jump. I would definitely say have it professionally installed. Its a job in which the experience makes a big difference. For install you're going to need an install kit (40-120$) and oil. The labor will run you 200-400 depending on the shop and quality. They make a great difference in acceleration!

I have a auto trans and plan to go with the 3.73's myself i just think 4.10 are to much gear. As for doing it yourself i say no leave it to the experts. Find a shop that does at least 20 rear ends per month thy are well versed in how to set up gears. If it is done wrong they will not last. It is not hard to do it is just something that needs to be done perfect. You will also needa tuner to correct the speedo after the gears have been insatlled so I would try and get a CAI and tuner first.

I have 3.73's and I like them. In my opinion, thats the gear ford should have put in the auto's.

I have an auto and Im pretty sure Im going to go with 3.90's .. every other auto seems to go with 3.73's so I figured Id be different. I didnt want to go all the way to 4.10's thoguh because I do a fair bit of highway driving. As for install... why take the chance of screwing up your rear end when you could just have it done right the first time. Think of it like this, if you install it wrong and something goes bad with it... if nothing else gets messed up except the gears you installed (very slim chance) then youll at least be replacing the gears, which is the price of an install right there.

First, welcome to MF and second get 4:10's. I personaly wouldn't waste my time with 3:73's but that is just me. Our new 5 speed auto mates with 4:10's really well. I hardly noticed a difference in gas mileage and at 80 mph I am at 2800 RPM maybe less. I say 4:10's no doubt. I just know I love mine. I also have an SCT X-calibrator(SP?) 2 and I can chirp third in drive!

I just had 3:73's put on my Auto, GT, the difference is amazing. The only thing is i can hear what sounds like a low hissing sound from the rear when I get above 30 MPH. I had the gears installed by a shop known for it's great reputation for installing gears, i went back and the mechanic went for a ride with me a said the sound is perfectly normal, I guess i was expecting it to be as quiet as the orginal gear. Is what the mechanic told me true?
