Default Octane Question.

Ok Dunno if you guys remember but Im debating on getting a shelby or upgrading my GT.
Around here the octane ive noticed is 91 tops.. (at least the couple of stations I've been to).
Which surprises me being in Texas.
I know the Shelby only uses Premium Gasoline. My question is... is 91 premium or not?
I know it says super unleaded by it but was wondering if its the same thing.
I know if I get a s/c and such on the GT that I'll want at least 91. (or will I have to use 93?)
Thanks for the help.

What part of Texas are you in? Here in Dallas, down in Austin, Premium is 93 octane. Sam's was selling 91 for premimum, but it is now 93 as well.

Do you live out in the Davis Mts. where altitude is a factor or El Paso where smog is a factor?

Higher altitude = less dense air = less octane needed. That's the reason you get 85 (R+M)/2 in Colorado for regular.

Texaco, Shell, Chevron, Vallero (used to be DiamondShamrock), Citgo, Conoco, Mobil, and Exxon all sell 93 for their premium around here and down in Austin. Same for the grocery stores, Kroger, Tom Thumb, HEB, etc.

Now, my Saleen says 91 octane, but I'm running 93 because I have a custom tune for 93. To finally answer your question, 91 is considered premium.

Hope this helps.

I'm in lubbock and regular is 86! Guess it's for all the farm equipment but I hate paying for plus only to get regular. And yes 91 is usually considered premium. most of texas is 87-89-91. 93 is kinda rare outside of the bigger cities

The vehicle manual, (as well as somewhere online), it should give the actual octane level that is recommended, which is most likely 91, since there are many places that don't have 93. I like in Southern California and I don't remember ever seeing 93 octane.

Saleen recommends 91 octane or higher. Here is the pdf manual for a Saleen blower with their canned tune:

http://www.saleen.com/installation-m...%20Rev%20G.pdf

If you do a custom dyno tune, whatever octane gas that is in the tank is what you should be running from then on. I had 93 octane in mine when it was dyno tuned, so that is what I run.

If you buy a canned tune, it should tell you the octane level of the fuel required.

For a stock unmodded GT, 87 is what is recommended.

Abliene must have some elevation and I'm guessing the humidity is lower, both of which make the air less dense so less octane is required for the vehicles around there.

Hope this helps.
