Default shorty headers

well, I definitley want to do some headers, and can't really do long tube since i GUESS their illegally in the great ol' state of California,[sm=icon_rock.gif] and like mentioned by some members, it'll be a pain to swap them back to stock, plus i also have the o/r H...so dont wanna be doin to many illegal mods.

But to get back on topic, how many horses can i expect out of installing shorty headers? Sound difference?

thankyou

Shorty headers are worth about 5-10 HP in the midrange and usually cost you some power at the top end.

I have seen one test that showed a good torque gain (I think it was 17 ft-lb) around 3000 RPM, but the other big magazine review of shorties showed no such gain.

In any case, I personally wouldn't bother with shorties given the expense and the hassle for such a minimal gain, but that is just my opinion.

I suggest either getting the longtubes and taking your chances with the CHP or leave it stock.

17 on the torque is what I read too. That was with BBK's. The horsepower increase was 10 or so at 3000 but only 4 at peak. It's a big enough difference to feel in the midrange (where youre at most of the time). Still, at the cost of the install (a pro can do it in 4-5 hours) they're not worth it. If you plan on doing them yourself I say go for it. I'm putting them on my car only because I have access to a lift. In the driveway is doable but plan on a long saturday to do it. I recommend only going with long tubes here in California provided you can budget yourself TRIPLE the install fees. That will pay for the install, removal, and re-install after you get popped. Knowing a smog-guy isn't enough - if you get nailed you have to go to a referee station to get it signed off. My roomate is a CHiPy and he can't even do it. In fact, my sponsor just got nailed the other day. Lucky for him he owns a lift and can change them himself but it's still a pain.

bottom line - they're relatively cheap and if your handy go for it

I'm from Cali myself and I pulled the trigger on the kooks long tubes anyway. Our emissions aren't due for 6 years on a new car, so that means 2011 for me. By then one of two things will have happened. I will have either 1) sold my car, possibly to someone outside of California or 2) turned it into a dedicated drag racing car so it won't be used on public roads.

im not talking about smog check dude - ANY COP at ANY TIME can write you up for modified exhaust. It sucks I know. Don't let some poster from Michigan or wherever tell you a cop cant because they can and do all the time. I got nailed a while back and my sponsor got nailed the other day in 2 seperate counties. I know they help a lot and I envy you but I still say it's not worth it.

Well I guess I just need to watch my back then. I don't generally do anything to bring attention to myself on public roads *knock on wood*. I was just assuming the original poster was referring to the smog aspect of long tubes.
