Yes you did the math right, I got 275/40/17 and I knew I was gonna reduce the diameter by around 1 inch give or take. I did it because I wanted to experiment how 3.73's will actually feel because I was let down by the 4.10 when they just died @ over 110 mph.

So, you guys who know about suspension, is this a good way to lower a car without having to replace suspension parts, or do you need to do that if you get smaller diameter tires? Are there any downsides to doing this? Maybe not even wider tires, just smaller diameter tires. Can you get 235/45ZR14's instead of the stock 235/55ZR14's, maybe? That would lower the car by nearly an inch.
Smaller tires would also have the same effect as changing the rear-end ratio, too, wouldn't it? With smaller tires, you'd have increased RPM for a given speed, so you'd have more power on the low end, but lower top speed, right?
Andrew, did you retune the speedometer?

235/45ZR14....you mean 235/45R17 correct....and yes you can do that
you do need to use a tuner to fix the speedo

Our Mustangs would look pretty silly with 14" wheels, wouldn't they?

I've got 275 40's 18 on the fanblades, and also have put 285 45 18 and 285 40 18 and even 295 45 18 on the rear with no problems, check out my other post about this with pictures and info
And about the 17's go 275 45 17 in the rear nothing wrong with that

RE: Largest tire
Besides making you lower to the ground, smaller diameter tires will increase the wheel well gap by as much as it lowers you. That's not normally what people want when lowering.

Cool.

Not to hijack, but i was thinking of putting 275/40-18 on my 18 x 8.5 OEM's. Has anyone tried that, as the rims are 1" narrower than the manufacturers recommended width? If so, any pictures? Thanks in advance.

RE: Largest tire
anything over 255 on an 8" rim is a waste - your just bulging the tire and not putting it to the ground. with enough muscle you can put a square peg in a round hole too - but that doesn't make it right.
my street tires are 245/45/17 (until my Brembo's go onnext month - time to buy ANOTHER set of wheels). they have a little less wheel well gap than stock, but I have H&R race springs. anything under a 50 series tire is gonna make the car look like a roller skate if it's not lowered. except with 20's of course, but that's a whole other deal
