Exhaust question for you guys
Yeah I know there are dozens of threads already with links to many different exhaust options. But to be honest a LOT of those don't really tell you how it will sound in person. The recordings can sound tinny or you get wind noise, or the person doesnt rev the car, or they leave it in the garage etc etc.
My wife and I are about to buy what will be my 3rd GT. We are having the usual mods installed immediately. I know which hood, whells, spoiler, etc etc I want.....she wants the glassback...but I can live with that, but my problem is with the exhaust. My first mustang was a 1988 GT with equal length shorty headers, off road h-pipe, and flowmasters 2 chambers on 2.5" pipe. It was very low and throaty. Not overly loud but the rumble was perfect.
The second mustang was a 1997 GT with Steeda headers, Bassani hiflo x-pipe, and flowmasters. The sound was pretty good but not quite like the first. I liked it well enough, but I would really like to get the sound I had witht he first, or close to it.
I have heard that the Flowmasters dont sound as good on the new Stangs. Is this true or is it that people just want something different? I was wondering if anyone had any ideas what I should install to try to get that REAL Mustang rumble. Not the kid who only put flows on, or the kid who stole the exhaust of his dads chevy farm truck and had it rewelded to fit. With my first car I was in a couple of Mustang clubs and we saw a LOT of nice cars that sounded like ****. I want to make sure I have as much info as possible so that I dont waste money or hate the sound.
I am going with headers, and need to know, based on your experience, whether to go with hi flo or off road x or h pipe and which muffler kit.
Thanks guys. And yes, there will be pics posted as soon as we get the car.

RE: Exhaust question for you guys
I used the flowmasters for about 5 months and i didnt like them one bit, they sound nothing like the previous year flows. Right now im using long tubes, with an h pipe that i welded on high flow cats and borla stinger axle backs.. to me it has a low deep rumble sound.

I've heard similar statements about the Flowmasters on the 05-07's. I'm stock and installed the FRPP Stingers. I love the deep, throaty sound and everyone that hears it gets that Chit-eatin' grin and "Oh, yeah!" response. And at WOT you almost think you're running straight thru's. Other than some cabin drone between 1500 and 2000 RPM, it's beautiful. Sorry, but I don't have a sound clip.

Sadly the short answer is it won't sound like your old car, the 3v just sounds too different. If you can handle a bit of drone, start with the stingers and work y our way up the exhaust.

A friend of mine has an '05 GT w/ bassani o/r x-pipe and and LT headers, and had flowmaster and he did not like them. he changed to borla stingers and was very pleased. it sounded throatier and lower, much better.

you went from the best sounding exhaust to the next best, now the 05 GT is the worst haha.
stay away from the flowmasters. their main strength was that they sounded really good when they had some pipe behind them, as well as just sounding really good with the sound of the 5.0 and 2v 4.6's. they just sound terrible with the 3v.
get some mid mufflers.
