RE: i think I'm going back to the factory h-pipe with cats
I had the same problem when I installed my latest exhaust set up. Off road X pipe with my previously installed flowmasters. To quote RetroS197 "VERY VERY RASPY".
After doing some more research on this subject, I found that it just comes down to the fact thatwith the S197 exhaust set- up,(the mufflers at the very end of the exhaust run),that when you take the cats out, the exhaust gasses are just moving too fast for the chambered muffler to work as they are suppose to. I corrected this by having in-line resonators installed after the X pipe and before the pipes travel up over the axle. That is about where the mufflers would have been installed on an older model Mustang.
There was plenty of room. The resonators were 4" round, one was 16" long and the other was 18" long. I used two different sizes so as to have two slightly different sounds. This was to hopefully have a sound canceling effect forless drone at cruising speed.
All I can say is, it seems to have worked for my set-up. the raspy sound is gone and I have little or no drone when cruising.I can hear my stereo... "Good Luck"

RE: i think I'm going back to the factory h-pipe with cats
That's why I got the X-pipe with Hi Flo cats, I can always swap it out with an O/R pipe but with LT headers can't go back to stock h-pipe,
I get tons of compliments on the sound, I got MAC exhaust because it is very deep and loud, this dulls any raspiness, only get thatwhen I really get on it and then it screams !!!
What brand off road pipe you got ? Do they make a catted version ? Don't go back to stock, that's going backwards !!!
