Default RE: cons of non-intercooled SC

I ran a non-cooled Vortech kit all summer. Yes it is true that you run a higher risk of detonation due to higher intake temps, but that's why you account for it during the tuning process. I ran my car hard all summer and never had an issue. It was custom tuned by Brenspeed and put down around 440 rwhp. The biggest problem is heatsoak, yes even with the centri-style blowers. Once you got the intake temps up to normal, power would drop noticeably by around 20-30 rwhp.

In September I did upgrade the system with a Paxton air-to-air cooler and changed pullies from the stock 3.8 to 3.33. This allowed my to increase power to ~470 rwhp 415 rwtq with roughly the same tune. Plus now heatsoak is pretty much non-existant, my car put down those numbers after 1.5 hour drive and 15 minute cool down; three dyno pulls and power/tq varied by about 3 total.

If you run a non inter cooled sc your tuner shouldde-tune the car slightly to account for higher temperature charges when the motor is hot. If you run an inter cooled sc you can run more boost and make more horse power. However, if you are planning on making more than 450 hp you run the risk of breaking one of those powdered rods. You will hear from a lot of guysthat syathey are running 500+ hp and there motor is fine, but the fact is you can only cheat death for so long and those motors will break prematurely. If you want high boost and high hp, do a forged bottom end (then see how long your tranny, drive shaftand rear end last if you are into hole shots). Spend the money now, or spend more money later.

The experts say youcan safely make380 to 400 rwhpwith a non inter cooled sc on a stock motor. It allcomes down to how much you want to spend and what your application is.
