Question about sales tax for anybody in NY with a 2006 GT
So its about that time here in NY. I'm starting to make my preparations to bring my car out for the spring
But I have a question regarding NYS Sales tax. When I purchased my 2006 Mustang GT. It was purchased in New Jersey, I drove it home on a NJ 20 day temp tag. And I bought the car on November 8th, and then put it away for the winter on the 28th. So I haven't even registered it or paid the sales tax here in NYS. I'm wondering what I can expect to pay for sales tax when I go to register it. My father seems to think they may charge me sales tax based on KBB value, Due to people lying about what they paid for their vehicles, for lower sales tax purposes. Which would really screw me because my KBB value is $25,100 and I paid $19,000 for the car. So what I'm asking is for an estimate on what I'll be looking to pay for sales tax. I think I covered all of the basics. The reason I ask is because I have to save up the money for my tax and I have roughly $1100 saved thus far. And it would be nice to know how much I need to have saved. Thanks in advance.

When you go to register it at dmv they'll need to see the bill of sale to see what you paid for it and charge you sales tax on the amount you paid.
