How does the Shelby GT Mustang make so much torque?
Just curious about this so I though I would post the question to all of you.
In the April addition of Motor Trend, there was an article called "Pony Expressed" I'm sure I'm not the first on here to mention it.
Anyway, in the article they compare a Stock Mustang GT, A Roush, A Saleen, and a Shelby. (All non-supercharged versions).
The stock Mustang dyno'd at 262 hp at 5545 rpm and 285 ft/lbs of torque at 4170 rpm.
The Roush Mustang (which is basically stock power-wise) dyno'd at 261 hp at 5815 rpm and 286 ft/lbs of torque at 4140 rpm.
The Saleen Mustang had the following performance upgrades: A Saleen Performance Tune, 98mm MAF with Saleen Extreme Inlet Pipe, U/D pulleys, and Axel Backs. It dyno'd at 277 hp at 5590 rpm, and 292 ft/lbs of torque at 4210 rpm.
The Shelby Mustang had the following performance upgrades: A Ford Racing Performance Tune, A 90mm CAI (FRPP/Steeda CAI) with the stock inlet pipe, FRPP splice in X-pipe and FRPP GTA Axel Backs. It dyno'd at 273 hp at 5790 rpm, and 304 ft/lbs of torque at 4100 rpm.
I was just curious as to what may havecontributed to the Shelby’s impressive torque figure and thought it might lead to some interesting discussion?
Could it be the FRPP Tune, maybe the tune is geared more towards toque? Could it be the 90mm MAF coupled to the comparatively narrow, stock 85-86mm inlet pipe, which may help keep intake velocity high? Or could it be to the FRPP splice in X-pipe? I know the opinion of the FRPP X-pipe is that it only yields 2 or so peak hp but what is it doing to the torque curve?
Hopefully this hasn’t already been brought up, or if so, hopefully not in this way. I just thought it gave us a unique opportunity to evaluate several different performance mod configurations and discuss what works, what might work better in specific situation/combinations, and why?

RE: How does the Shelby GT Mustang make so much torque?
It's mainly the tune and intake. The Shelby GT has 3.55 gears, and they wouldn't make a difference anyway. Most of the aftermarket intake and tunes (Bamachips/Brenspeed/VMP/etc) easily make 280+whp. The FRPP tune is still conservative.

They might have got a lucky shelby gt with a hot tune. Mod a stock gt with the same mods as the shelby with a brenspeed or bama tune and you'll probably be a few ponies above.

Yes, I agree, I have a Brenspeed tune and I am sure that I am putting down more rwhp, but I was impressed with the 304 ft/lbs of torque the Shelby made. The Saleen, even with U/D pulleys, only made 292 ft/lbs of torque. 12 extra ft/lbs of torque is pretty impressive.

not to make excuses but the 7 spoke saleen wheel and tire weigh close to 60 lbs each. thats alot of rotating weight. but then again i dont know what the bullits on the shelby weigh.

The Shelby was wearing 9x20 AR Wheels front and rear with 255/35R20's in front and 275/35R20's in the rear. The Saleen was wearing 9.0x20 front and 10.0x20 rears with 275/35R20's in front and 275/40R20's in the rear. Weights should be similar.
