Default RE: Hit 170 today?

The question is: Can you get the tach to 5000 RPM in 5th gear? If you can, (despite drag, etc. etc.), then most likely you are traveling 170 mph. I don't know if you can do it.....modified or not and I do not have the cajones to try it myself.

I think what the other guys are saying is that with wind drag and other factors, there is not enough horsepower generated to get the motor to turn that fast to take you to the speed of 170 mph. If you had another 100 - 150 HP then perhaps the mill would turn the 5000 RPM's , then overcoming the speed induced drag etc. and propel you to a higher top speed.

Handling? I have no freakin' idea what it would handle like at that speed. I know I would be real worried about tires, animals (soon to be road kill), and anything else in your way. I've been to 140 - 150 in late 60's / early 70's cars and it felt pretty freaky from a control standpoint.

if you did hit 5k rpms and are still running the 3:55's then you hit 173.8 MPH

RPM/3.55/0.675(5th gear ratio)*87.9646(tire circumference)*60(min/hr)/5280(ft/mi)/12(in/ft)

myself? i'm not doubting. in stock form the car is only putting down 230rwhp @ 4300 rpms when the 150mph gov kicks in and with your mods probably more like 250. the power curve will continue to climb most significantly between 4300 and 5k by as much as 40-50 rwhp and then only by 10 or so between 5k and 5600.

Come on guys....grow some big-uns and try it! Sowaxeman......how fast does the factory say that your Saleen will run top speed?...That will knock out those of you who say that the aerodynamics of these cars dont allow for this speed.....As for those of you who think I'm insane to go that fast, let me assure you that I dont run 150+ every time I get into my car. I'm a 37yr old Firefighter and has had to pull many twisted young bodies out of vehicles. I have also run 800+HP Blown "street"cars down the 1320. If I didnt trust the conditions, I would not of pushed my car that fast. If I had it to do again.....I might not have pushed it quite that hard.....and I definately wouln't have shared the experience with the rest of you...LOL ....As for the ones of you who say that you have to figure in drag to see what the car would be traveling at 5000rpm, well you dont have a clue and should go to the V-6 only side(sorry guys, did I say that?). One way or the other, the speedo was WAY past pegged and these cars are awsome..........

While all of the arguments about how much extra HP is needed to overcome wind resistance at 170 mph are true, the original poster did say that he has a manual transmission. Barring clutch slippage, if he was seeing 5000 rpm in 5th gear, and his speedo is accurate at 2500 rpm in 5th gear, then his "double the speed" calculation is right, and is independent of all of the other formulas..

BUT - his speedo could easily be reading 4-5 mph high at 2500 rpm (meaning 8-10 mph high at 5000 rpm). 170 does sound like too much for 300 HP, especially with the Mustang's not-all-that-aerodynamic body. Are you sure you didn't keep it in 4th? (Just kidding!) This raises a good question - is there a speed limiter in the 2005 Mustang? A lot of European cars have their speed electronically limited to 155 mph (actually it is set at 250 km/hr), which is done to avoid higher taxes in a number of European countries on cars that can exceed this limit.

On a side note - what are your tires rated at? VR tires are only rated up to 149 mph, although I suppose that the rating is good for extended operation, and can be exceeded for short periods.

Liimeters are there for the tire manufactors also. If your tires are speed rated at 118 from the factory, you can bet the car will be limited to under 118 mph.

nice run, be careful those pirellis are rated only for 168MPH!

edit: damn typos

I think the math is absoulutly correct. Drag has nothing to do with it, the crankshaft is directly connected to the rear wheels (i.e no slippage). The tire issue is also probably a non issue. Most ratings have a margin of error which could be as high as 20% so a 168mph ratting could possibly go 201mph without exploding sending you flying off the road at close to 200mph in wich case it wouldn't matter if you were going 150 or 200 you would die an exciting death!

Anything is possible there's a video with a guy that used the digital speedo feature on his Cobra and even that was probably off, but he ran 170mph in 5th gear, and still had a gear to go. Grab another speedo then you'll know for sure.

I agree! Speed Week @ Bonneville is less than two weeks away, and I am so stoked!!! We're going as spectators. There's gonna be a few guys there running hopped up Model A's & T's with flathead bangers in an attempt to hit 100mph. I'll keep an eye out for any 05's on the salt. Let me know if any of you are planning to go.
