Default Gear whine, or something else?

So I have a set of 4.10s sitting on shelf in my garage, waiting for me to find some time to actually install them. However, with gear whine as such a big issue, I have become espcially sensitive to something like that and for comparison, I have started to really listen to the car.

Today I was listening and noticed something that sounds suspicously like gear whine with my stock gears. The car is totally stock (at this point). But the whine isnt constant; it shows up from about 25mph to 40. It is most noticable in second gear, but can still be heard in third (albeit softer from what I assume is lower RPM). No other problem or noise anywhere else. What could it be?

Of course it COULD be.
But you need to know what gear whine sounds like in order to judge that.
You need to find someone that knows to listen for you.
A friend or something.

And I would not take it to the dealer. They will say it is not just so they can get you out of their hair.

Gears, and sometimes the transmission, can whine a bit on any car depending on what's going on. Not the end of the world.

Do you only hear it under acceleration?

It's possible. The more I think back, I believe my stock gears originally did whine, but it was very faint and not as noticeable. Had to strain to hear and specifically listen for it.

Don't fear the gear. Find a trustworthy and accomplished installer. Hopefully you have the FRPP set and not the motives.

I had my 4.10's done at PSI motorsports and they turned out whine free.

Thanks for the replies.

I do know what whine sounds like; it does have that distinct flavor. But I've never heard it only crop up at certain speeds. It is strongest under acceleration but you can still hear it if I'm backing off. With the mods about to go on the car, I just want to make sure I'm not going to end up with a transmission issue.

If it's gear whine, I'm about to shove that problem anyway...

Also, I really want to install the gears myself; I do worry about them being noisy. I did of course get the FRPPs.

You can install the gears yourself, but there's quite a few critical steps.

Gear whine is fairly distinctive. Very different from growling.

I had the funny noise you describe.
I thought it was axle bearings.
It was not.
But after the bearing replacement
and refill with Royal Purple Synthetic,
the noise has subsided back to normal.
You rear lube level could be low.
I would check that first.
