Default Putting a spare engine together somewhere on hold perhaps?

Ok, so I've been mulling over my situation, my car is the only car. I may change this with some beater down the road, but regardless I don't want this one to be out of commission for long, so...

Stupid question 1:
Do any/many shops, say, let you pay for a block, get the options together for you, then could actually house it for when yours goes kaput? Giving an fast swap-out, then tune?

Stupid question 2:
What are the viable drop-in/near drop-in options? Just these?

I've done a bit of searching, but it's really only scratched upon in a few threads.
