Noise when cold/certain RPMs
Hey guys,
I did a quick search and didn't find anything related to this, but when the car (manual trans) is cold, theres a funny noise coming from underneath. I don't want to be presumptuous and definitely say its coming from the tranny, but it sounds like its coming from there. I would describe the sound almost like a metal brush on some sheet metal, and it goes away when I push in on the clutch.
Funky thing too, when the car warms up, the sound is pretty much gone. I saw some threads saying its the metal plate between the housing of the tranny, and I shimmed it with some rubber, but that didn't make the noise go away, it just....changed it really. Before I shimmed it, the noise would be most prominent around 1500 RPM and then again around 2000 RPM, especially if you punched it. Now the noise is a lot more tame with the rubber shims, but if you punch it, the noise comes back with a vengeance, again until the car warms up.
I'm at my wits end as to what it is, and I'm at school now so I have limited access to tools/diagnostics unfortunately. Is it in the transmission, is it the exhaust heat shields? I just find it odd that it pretty much goes away as soon as the car is warmed up. I really appreciate any advice, thanks in advance.

There's a TSB for the metal plate that you refer to but I believe the fix in the TSB required dropping the tranny if I'm not mistaken.
If the sound is more of a metal "scraping" sound, then try torquing down all of the exhaust system pipe joint clamps about 1/4 to 1/2 turn.
