2006 GT with 5 speed manual transmission, the backup lights are on anytime the ignition is on. Is there a switch near the gearshift lever that activates the lights?

Most likely it's the back up light switch. It's on the transmission itself on the drivers side, under the car. It's got two wires going to it. You can temporarily disconnect it, if the lights go out then you know it's the switch. If they stay on, it could be a short in the harness itself.

Sometimes electrical connections just need a tender touch. I disconnected the electrical piglet from the plug on the side of the transmission. The backup lights went off. Not knowing which part was the switch I plugged it back in just for kicks and it now works as it should.
