3v Spark Plug Questions
So recently I developed a misfire in one of my plugs so I thought "how hard could this be? all I have to watch out for is the thin threads and make sure it doesn't strip". Well, I found out the hard way that the plugs tend to come out in pieces with fords 2 piece plugs. With 143,xxx miles I have no idea when they were changed last but what I managed to get out was the main plug and electrode with only the tip left in. being in the middle of a complicated roundtrip my best option was to get the plug back together and back to my school which was a 20 minute drive ( in total the roundtrip was much longer and was supposed to go back and forth) I already have bought the replacement OEM plug and am about to buy the "special tool" for the removal of the tip. ::Questions:: Are there any crazy solutions for this I don't know? And for the future, what 1 piece aftermarket plug is a good daily? feel free to ask questions.
I'm on my second set of Champion 7989 (104K miles). They were one of the first one-piece available for these engines I. dumped the garbage two piece at 10K and installed champion. Installed new ones again at 70K. Never had a problem with them.
depending on the year of your car, it may not like the aftermarket plugs, I.E. misfires, limp mode. there was a TSB to remedy this. just make sure the gap is right, should be .054 not .044 as some come with. good luck
The Ford TSB is an updated two-piece plug that incorporates a couple of weld-points on the cone to body joint where the plugs normally fail. It's a bandaid fix IMO and you'll never know how successful it was because most of the vehicles affected by the breaking of the plugs are 12+ years old now (2005 to early 2008). Most are on their 2nd or 3rd owners that aren't into maintenance as much or will simply write off the problem as due to the age of the vehicle.

TSB 04-26-22. my GT was built 11-04. I tried E3 plugs and HT1 and had multiple misfire codes and car went into failsafe mode immediately after plug change. put in the SP-514 and car ran great again. I have not done the TSB or as far as I know of any since ive owned the car from 12/14. I told Ford to not touch the OBD port when I got the airbags replaced (twice) because of my aftermarket tune. I keep the SP-514 in her to keep her happy, only 76K miles tho.
