I have a 2000 GT that needs a new engine, I found a '96 GT engine online in my price range and was wondering if it would be compatible or what would I have to do for it to fit and function properly? Thanks guys.

 

correction, I found an engine to a '98 and not a '96 lol. My bad

I originally read this as a V6 to V8 conversion question. My bad.

Before you proceed, you do know that there are significant differences between a 1996 - 1998 and 1999 - 2004 4.6 2V engine, correct? This engine should for the most part swap right in, but there will be some wiring stuff related to differences in ignition components. And I think a fuel related hurdle or two. But the bad news is it has a lot less power than your old engine.

Recommend you keep looking. 2001 through 2010 CrownVic/GrandMarquis/Towncar is a good candidate. Can often be found for around a $Grand depending on age and mileage. What you want to stay away from is anything from police/taxi/livery service vehicles. Ton of miles and millions of hours spent idling. To verify a sellers advertised mileage, run a Carfax report on the VIN of the donor vehicle.

 

And the above CrownVic etc engine is identical to what you will be removing, save for a handful of external differences. You will be retaining your exhaust manifolds, intake plenum, flywheel (if manual trans) and a handful of other things. Other than that it is as direct a swap as one could hope for.

 

Don't get a Pre 99 mustang motor to put into a post 99 mustang. There is a significant change in HP. Pre 99 had 225, 99+ has 260. The heads are different and there are other changes that contributed to the gain in output..

Also, depending on local emissions law it may not even be an option. Some states and municipalities have laws prohibiting putting an older ECM/PCM into a newer car because it may not comply with emission expectations of the newer car.

With your type of swap you would need to install the engine, wire harness and PCM into your newer car to get the motor to run right. An emissions station might redflag that when they go to read the PCM and find that it's not the right year and VIN for your car.
