News that the 2020 Ford Mustang Shelby GT500's top speed would max out at a limited 180 mph yesterday really seemed to bum people out, with some even saying the Fun Police had been involvedin the decision. Assuming you could even find a place to go faster, we asked Ford why they won’t let you.

That's a lame take. Where is anybody going to use 700 hp anyway? Or even 500?

It doesn't matter. When an automaker is trying to swing a big **** and tout monstrous numbers such as 700+ hp on a very high performance car, that 180 mph top speed figure still comes up short.

 

Practically every German performance car was or is limited to 150/155mph in Germany with autobahns with no speed limit for what I believe are practical reasons. 150 is fast enough for most people in the first place and the cars have to be engineered a little differently aero and mechanically to actually be safe at those speeds. There is no where in America to go 200mph so why bother in the first place. I have no problem with Ford putting a limiter on it because the aftermarket will find a way to remove it if you really want to try to go that fast. I've seen stock cars without roll cages involved in high speed crashes while stationed in Germany and it ain't pretty.

 

Annnnnndddd the point is? Strictly bragging rights for someone that shops by spec sheet alone. Anyone that knows Mustangs knows that we (collectively the Mustang enthusiasts) hardly every keep things stock so, what do you think the first thing someone will do with the Shelby GT 500...? Tune it. Guess what will be removed in that tune...? Speed limiter! Next non issue?

 

I guess the big question, as far as removing the limiter goes, will be whether the owner is ready or not to kiss that warranty goodbye.

 

Compared to the " benchmark " 13/14's, the 2020 MY comes up short on more than MPH..

but 700 won't get you to 180 in the mile anyway, you need more, I was at just north of 900 to the wheels in this run.
