Default Water temperature sensor

I was firsttold that the reason my car was overheating, was because of a faulty water temperature sensor. I was told that it is behind the alternator, next to the block (towards the front) The piece I was given to replace, doesn’t fit. Does anyone know where the water temperature sensor is located on a 2001 v6 Mustang?
