Welcome to the forum, cheap fix is buy a cassette that has a jack head phone lead on it that plugs into the head phone socket on the ipod, simple push cassette into the player and select the track on the ipod, cheap as chips!

Welcome to the forums. Those I think had the "Double DINN" stereo slots, which means it is a bit larger than normal. There are dash kits that can convert it to a single DINN (regular size headunit) You might think about, for Christmas, a double DINN with navigation to help her get around.
Not sure where she's going to school but you could also have them check the coolant levels before it starts to get too cold. A better air filter might help to improve gas mileage slightly, but with that kind of mileage other than the general up keep you should be fine.
