Default Painting Body Parts

I have a 2015 silver Mustang GT and want to paint the black plastic side trim, chin spoiler and tail valance in order to body color the car and hide the ugly trim. Has anyone had luck with painting these parts? I can't afford a professional job so I am doing projects as I can get to them. I don't want to paint and have it lift off later so I want to do it right first time. Help is appreciated! Tim

In my opinion, your first problem was you stating that you can't afford a professional job. On a car this new and expensive I say leave it alone until you can.

Second, painting the parts you specified opens up a world of adhesion issues and rock chips galore on the chin spoiler. Down the road, no matter how good the work, it will wind up looking terrible.

I agree. Over the last 5 years I have literally painted my entire car. Took me 5 years to do it but it is all professionally done and looks like it rolled out of the factory that way. Even my add on parts were all done that way. I have several boxes of small parts now in my junk room just waiting for the $650 bucks I need to get them sprayed before going on the car. Slow but sure I am getting there. $450 and counting. But he is correct. What do you want a couple of years from now. Especially on a daily driver.

Did the same thing with my wife's new Taurus. 2 days off the lot and I bought the rear wing for it from Ford. Cost me more to have it color matched than it did to buy and install the goofy thing. But they prepped the plastic and everything so paint peel or chipping is not going to be a problem.

I hate to say this, but you get what you pay for. You want a good job find someone that can do it the right way if your not able to. You'll be happier for it in the end.

That's what I thought, I don't have much money because I'm handicapped and saved to pay cash for the car. It's a garage queen only going out for nice days and shows for now. I have Foose Legend wheels on order for now and I'm looking to do minor upgrades as cash allows. I waited years for the improved rear end and it was worth it! Thanks for the input!

If you truly want to do it your self you can BUT its a lot work some sanding a little priming and then the paint and clear coat and it will look great and it will last.. All of your paint and other supplies that you need can be ordered from Automotive Touchup they have everything that you will need and they are the best. You can get your paint in a spray can that is the same match as what your car is and they do a great job mixing the paint. Please check out there web page.. I have painted different parts on my car and it looks professional..
Take your time and read up on Automotive Touchup. Get your primer your paint and your clear coat and take your time and you can do it and save a lot of money..
