Default 3.7L to 4.6L Swap

Hey guys, my buddy has a 2009 Ford Crown Victoria with a 4.6 V8 and I currently have a 2014 Ford Mustang 2014. Is an engine swap doable between these two cars? Is it a simple switching if the engines or would the transmission also need to change?

Thanks!

What is wrong with the 3.7 engine in your 2014?

Going from the 3.7 to the 4.6 V8 will do you no good. The 4.6 on it's best day
is 315 Horse power (2010 Mustang version, or the 2008 -2009 Bullitt), and the
3.7 is 305 HP, and the 05-09 Mustang 4.6 V8 are 300 HP.

Believe it or not, the 4.6 V8 in that crown Vic, non police car is 224 HP at 4750 RPM,
so you're going from a 305 HP V6 to a 224 HP V8. You're going to put a lot more into
that V8 for Mustang numbers, and that's 300HP, without the modded parts and program
from the 2010 V8, and/or 08-09 Bullitt V8s for 315 HP.

The CVPI is 250 HP @ 4900 RPM.

SO, you want your friend's CV to be 305 HP, and you want to reduce your 14 mustang to
224? Why? OR, you just didn't know the specs.... Even then, your V6 isn't going into
that CV easily, totally different platform, cradle configuration... Tell you one thing, you'd
have the only 224 HP V8 2014 Mustang, and even the EcoBoost four cylinders will
smoke you.

And the other, the transmission has to go with the engine.

You should check local emission laws regarding engine swaps, most won't let you put an older engine, and be road legal.

OLD motor? 2009? It's the same motor in the 05-10 Mustang GTs, just under powered
in the Crown Vic. There will be NO emissions issues putting that V8 in his Mustang,
it's designed for it, it's still an S197 platform, so he needs all 05-10 V8 parts to get
it to work. STILL, 305HP to 224? My guess is also, there are no emissions where
he is. I could even do it in PA, if I lived in a county that does not have emissions.

Other issues will arise if he wants to resell the Mustang, no one will want a 224 HP
V8 Mustang, AND, will also wonder why in the world would someone take a 305HP
motor out, and put in a 224 HP motor.. He will essentially have the slowest 2014
Mustang on the planet, unless someone else, for some other ungodly reason, did
the same type of thing.

Most won't let you? LET you? How would anyone stop him from doing it? All they
can do is, after its done, is fail it. They won't be there to stop anyone from doing
the swap, it's what they do after it's done. They may not allow it, but they're
not showing up to stop it from happening.

Yes old motor, that year was never offered with a 4.6, 2014 only came with 5.0 or 3.7.
So legally it would be a clear violation of most states emissions laws.
And sure no one will stop him from doing it, but if it can't pass im testing, and can't get tags, he will have fun driving around with expired tags.

There are parts in PA where, nothing will happen, they don't do emissions tests, so
nothing will come of it.

If you swap with an older motor, and it can be certified that it met the emissions levels,
you won't have a problem either. Some states don't seem to care what you do as long as
you have lights, isn't terribly obnoxiously loud, and the car passes the emissions test.
Places like Michigan, If you can screw a license plate to it, it's legal.

Federally, it is illegal all the way around. Federally, you aren't supposed to put a new
motor into an older car, unless you bring ALL the emissions stuff with it. ECU means
Emissions Control Unit, it's not PCM, ECM, and so on, it's an ECU always and forever.

You would also not be "allowed" federally, to put an LS1 motor in your Mustang, or a
BARRA motor, the Aussie I6 for the Mustangs over there...

Even if someone dropped a dime on you, by calling the feds that you put a 2009 Mustang
motor in your 2014 Mustang, there is almost NO chance you'll see even a letter from the
EPA... IF there was a garage that was doing this 100 times a month, they'd be shut
down, but nothing is going to happen to the end user...

Plus, you mean to tell us, you do nothing illegal? You don't even record a TV show?

Adding FOG lamps to a car that was not equipped with them is technically illegal,
in PA it is, their laws are, if the car did not come with it, don't add it. So many
things.mods we to do cars are illegal, even making your stereo louder than factory
is illegal. You have people out there, even mentioned here, who remove cats, and other
emissions equipment... People change their PCVs to vents, even adding a CATCH
can is illegal, because you tampered with the emissions control system... So please,
2009 into '14 motor swap is the least of anyone's concern...
