Default `67 stock 289 fuel inlet problem

Hi All, I have a problem with fuel leaking at the inlet fitting/filter. I have a 2 barrel, I think it`s a autolite 2100, no tag. Using a screw in filter at carb, 1/8 ". Is this supposed to be pipe thread? No matter how many gaskets I use it leaks & I don't want to strip carb by over wrenching it . The line from the pump ends at the thermo & then rubber hose to filter. I have a feeling someone changed the fitting at the carb, was the factory inlet fitting at the carb actually a filter or maybe just a carb fitting before a inline filter? Thanks for any help.
