Looking for way to identify engine in mustang
I recently purchased a 2001 Mustang GT 4.6L with a manual transmission from a family friend who said that he replaced the engine with another 4.6L mustang engine with 68,000 miles on it. I have yet to see receipts for the engine. I want to make sure the engine is correct for the car. I have been having issues with it running slow. It just does not seem to be as fast as it should be. It seems like when you get on it in first and second gear the RPM's are rising but the car is just not picking up speed as fast as it should. I am starting to wonder if it is the right motor or if the clutch is slipping because it does seem to have a noise coming from the clutch. Does anyone know where to find the VIN number on the engine block? And also can a really dirty air filter be the reason for this? Thanks for any input.

Did you check your rearview mirror for a bunch of tire smoke ????
If a mustang is revvin' and you're not goin' anywhere, you're smokin' the tires. lol.
From your description, it really does sound like a clutch problem to me.
You can learn a few things about the location of the engine code at this website:

good luck.

Michael,
Welcome to the forums.
I would think he would have kept any documentation with the car. I guess I would find it odd that someone would actually change one 4.6 for another 4.6...and that 4.6 would have 68K miles on it.
Things I would try before you go hunting down a VIN number on the motor. I would clean the Throttle Body, I would clean the air filter...the fuel filter. These would be the cheap fixes.
The next thing I would do is put premium fuel in it. I would also remember that the 4.6L isn't a beast...I think those years put out about 250-270HP. If you find that none of those things work and you feel that it isn't mechanical...ie...clutch, like Tom said. Get it tuned, Bama or Brenspeed will def wake it up.
Let us know. And what part of Ohio?
Matt
