Default exhaust question

i had an o/r xpipe and 2 chamber flowmaster. it resonated(backfired) so much that i couldnt take it and actually welded my original cats to the x-pipe. now its so quiet its almost stock except above 4000 rpm. is it the stock cats that make it that much quieter or is it the cats period. also my exhaust guy and i thought one of the mufflers might have been shot originally, but that was not the case. if anyone else has had this problem let me know. also i have no problem getting high flow cats or a different mid pipe as long as it doesnt resonate like that. it sounded so ratty when i let of the throttle
