Default strut noise

Today when I was driving I noticed alot of noise coming from the suspension, mostly the rear, when i would go over bumps in the road. it has to be either the struts or the springs. could this be a buffer that has moved out of place or is faulty. any ideas? thanks

well i think i figured out my own question. I think my stock strut mounts failed. I found a set of steeda replacements that are stronger, but are $300 at lethelperformance. has anyone else had this problem and how did you fix it?

I think you are looking at the *front* strut mounts. Is the failure the fronts or rears, since you were mentioning the noise in the rear. If it's the fronts, there is a Service bulletin about it and you can get itreplaced at the dealer for free.

I just installed my springs tonight and there is a clunking sound coming from my front struts. I'm not sure this is the same noise you are describing, but a friend of mine thinks its becase the strut mount bearings are binding. I'm not very familiar with exactly how this new macpherson strut system works...is there a bearing in the strut mount? Is the clunking noise when turning the streering wheel, is what he described something I can fix by adjusting something?

no, you need new strut mounts or camber plates... when the stock strut mounts gets compressed it molds or forms to everything, when you take them apart and put them back in most times than not it will bind in there causing noise !

The 2005 Mustang has a different sway bar link with a very large ball joint on each end. I installed the Ford Racing Handling kit and a "klunk" appeared a few month later. The ball joint in the sway bar link was the cause. I ordered replacements from the dealer and replaced them with new part which has a smaller ball joint. What happens (especially on lowered cars) is the large joint (factory 2005) hits the strut when you turn the wheels and go over a bumb. The parts cost about $25 each and take a 18mm & 8mm wrench to replace.

Another cause is the upper strut "seat" the big rubber thing with the 4 studs that stick up through the strut tower. Ford has them in stock for about $20 each, there was a TSB on them for the 2005 GT.

Steeda Upper Strut Mounts - HD
[555-8120]
$279.95

A heavy duty, direct replacement upper strut mount to replace the weak factory mounts for S197 Mustangs that can be used on the street! The Steeda street heavy duty upper strut mounts are manufactured to the same exacting tolerances as our industry leading caster/camber plates. They utilize a roller bearing that exceeds OEM specs to ensure precise suspension control. Will not fail on lowered cars like the factory piece. These upper mounts eliminate the "popping" sound that is common on lowered cars when the factory upper mount fails. Unlike the factory piece, you can also get an extra 1 degree of camber in each direction with these plates as well. Steeda's heavy duty upper mounts are specifically designed for street use and will not show any increase in NVH when installed. Price includes a set of two.
