Default Lets Talk Brakes

Hey guys,

I am thinking about upgrading my stock GT brakes. Here is my situation. '06 auto GT vert saleen supercharger 415 RWHP 411 Torque. My daily driver in the summer (6 months of the year) The only suspension mods I have are LCA's. I am thinking of trying to do a few auto X events in the near future.

This is what I was thinking:

- Brembo gt500 brakes both FRONT and BACK (do they come in red?)
- New 14" rotors
- Stainless steel brake lines
- New, better, brake fluid
- I have the gt500 front end, with the lower grill and brake cooling bezels, so I will hook those up to cool the brakes

So, my questions....

1. Roughly how much will this cost me?
2. Who should I get this stuff from, best price?
3. Do the Brembo brakes come powdercoated in red?
4. Any other suggestions? Additions or subtractions from my list?

Anything else I am missing?

Thanks,

Nick

Just get yourself a gt500 takeoffs. The rotors are 14 for the front and a little larger for the rear. But they dont come with rear calipers though. You only get a 4 piston brembo front. Those are only in black so your gonna have to powdercoat them yourself.
Takeoffs are roughly 600-800 range
Or you can buy ones from ford racing and those are in the range of $1000.

No, they don't come in red. They only come in black.

I have a Brembo rep in my pocket and can have whatever I want for my car if and when I want it at cost. I still don't have Brembo's because I don't want to spend the extra money on wheels and tires or take the points hit in TT. I do have them on my AI car.

Sheep will disagree, with me , and you can count on the replies coming from the placebo-effect people that will say i'm wrong and that their GT500 kit mad some massive difference.

The GT500 kit is a hodge-podge compromise. Ford wanted Brembos on the Shelby, and they wanted them cheap. The calipers that are on it are parts bin pieces with heavy oem type rotors. The calipers are not serviceable. If you were to buy a kit designed for the GT for only a little more than the FRPP/GT500 kit, it would come with much better parts.

The GT500's don't have special rear brakes either. Just different pads.

Get yourself some good pads, lines, and fluid. Spend the $1000.00 I just saved you on a set of tires.

Listen to RodeoFlyer.

Don't listen to sheep (the guy who knows a guy, who...).
Don't listen to salesmen.
Don't listen to ads (taking the place of salesman).
Don't listen to placebo-effected folks (who've been taken by salesmen or ads).

Listen to RodeoFlyer.

You'll save money this way, and you'll put yourself in a position to actually know what you need to meet your changing goals (rather than how to fulfill a desire for something that may have nothing to do with your goals). FWIW, new sticky tires are going to cut your stopping distances more than the take-offs.

And if I may add my own support: if you want to add brake ducts on the cheap, check out the write up I did a while back.

I would do like RodeoFlyer and Philostang have suggested.

I will say, if you already have the brake duct bezels on your lower grille, go ahead and run those ducts. Also get pads, fluid, and SS lines.

I just installed GT500 brakes on my 2006 GT. Honestly, I can't tell any difference on the street other than it might stop a little "smoother". Probably wishful thinking on my part. They do look good behind the chrome GT500 rims though so I'm happy with the upgrade. I agree with the previous posts that there are better ways to increase your stopping power if that is your only concern.

Wow. That's some unusual candor.

I agree, they are pretty. The thought had crosses my mind just for the bling factor. Maybe I could just get those clip on caliper covers.......

I am one of those who has the GT500 brake kit. The calipers are black and the rotors are heavy. In 6 road course track days last year there was no evidience of fade and the car always stopped straight and true. The other brake mods were Quantum front brake cooling ducts, SS lines. upgraded pads (DS2500 Ferodo front, Hawk HPS rear) and ATE Super Blue DOT 4 fluid.

The big disadvantage with the GT500 brake kit is finding wheels that clear the calipers. In my case that meant buying two sets of wheels, one for summer use and one for the snow tires.

I can't say if not having the GT500 kit would have resulted in brake fade on the track or not as all of the mods were done at once.

For this season I'm switching to EBC Yellowstuff pads front and rear and am installing a new Centric rotors front and rear. The old rotors are still good and will be cleaned up for use for the following season.

As my wheels are black and my car is intended to not attract attention I prefer the black calipers.

FYI - the pads also fit some WRX STis, Lancer EVOs,Acura TLs and Cadillac CTS-V and STS-V models so I guess their calipers are either the same or pretty similar.

From what I've heard Auto-X is not as hard on your brakes as the road race tracks. I'm running ATE super blue, Hawk pads, and SS lines (cooling ducts next upgrade). With no real problem down here in the TX heat. IMO Heed Rodeo's advice.

I would concur with that based on my experience. I doubt that there are many Auto-x courses where you go from about 100 MPH to about 20 MPH each lap and run for up to 1/2 hour without stopping.
