275-40-18 actuall width???
gettn ready to order a set of amr wheels and tires, going the staggered look, 255-45-18 up front and 275-40-18 in the rear, what i want the most is that impressive wide tire look in the back, how wide are the 275s actually and do they look good in the rear over the stock perillis or should i go wider in the back???

are those 18s with 255s up front and 275s in the rear, when u get time can u measure the width of the rear tire, and does all those rims come with the silver center caps, id thought they would be all black also for the stealth look??

They are 255's front and 275 rear. My car is at the shop for a service right now but I will measure them when I get it back tomorrow i would say they are about an 1 3/4 inches wider than stock. I am sure you could paint the centre caps for the look you want.

Well when you say 275 your actually already stating the width of the tire.
The tire width is 275mm, there is 25.4mm to every inch so 275mm/25.4mm is 10.82 inches in width.
Stock tire is 235mm or 9.25 inches. So you gain 1.57 inches of tread.
Id say the max tire width in the rear you could get on a stock 10-13' is a 295. Ive heard of more but depends on your wheel as well.

OP - Be careful with 275/40/18s when using 255/45/18s up front. The 275/40/18s are shorter than the 255/45/18s (26.7" vs. 27.0" respectively) and look funny to me. I am one that believes that a larger/taller tire belongs out back.
Case in point, look at the before and after pics that modman42 posted. With his new wheels and tires, the rear wheel well gap looks bigger now... This won't be much of an issue if the car is to be lowered though.
I would go with 275/40/19s in the rear to get more of the muscle car rake, but I am biased...

It gets confused further still when you realize that the maximum width of any tire varies from its theoretical value as the wheels you mount them on differ from the so-called "measuring width" wheel. An inch wider wheel than "measuring width" stretches the sidewall width out by about 10mm.
So it turns out that a "perfect 275/40" and a "perfect 255/45" will only appear to be about 10mm different in width when both sizes are mounted on 9.5" wide wheels. An alert observer may notice the difference in tread width or shoulder profile, but many people will not.
For a tread width comparison it's best to chase down the tire mfr information (available if you poke around at tirerack.com, discounttiredirect.com, nittotire.com and other tire sites). This can vary even more widely.

I run 275/40/18 in rear and 255/45/18 front for dry roads winter driving with my AS High performance tires, because that's the widest the AS cols weather tires come in, but ideally you want the 285/40/18 in rear and 255/45/18 in front at the same height, as I run my summer tires.
The 275/40/18's are a bit short for the large Mustang wheel wells, IMO. Erik
