Rex,
I wanted one every since they came out but would not pay over sticker. I had previously purchased three vehicles from my dealer (all cash) and thought I was a good customer. I was put on the list to get one of the first three in his allotment. When my name came up I was told by their internet manager that the price was $63,000 and I had right of first refusal. I kept trying with no luck until this economic crisis developed along with the sky high fuel prices this summer. About a month or two ago I started shopping Ebay and noticed that the Shelby GT 500s were not selling, actually nothing was.
So... I went back over to my local dealer and asked him if he could now locate one for me. He called me back a few days later and said he had found a blue 2008 model at 1,500 below sticker.
So.....I came up with this plan and it worked. I pulled up every Ford dealer in Ala., Fla., and Ga. and started sending them emails and calling to find out if they had a GT 500 in stock in either Torch Red or Vista Blue.
What I found was that there were several hundred sitting on dealer lots.
I then decided what the heck I would offer invoice on a 2009 and $1,500 below invoice on a 2008. I used this site to develop my offer.
http://www.edmunds.com/tmv/new/2009/...500/index.html
What you will find is there are two types of dealers:
1. Privately financed
2. Ford floor plan financed
The dealers financed by Ford are most "vulnerable" and actually lose money if they do not sell their vehicles. Even if they sell them at cost they still earn about $900 per car.
I started making offers......The dealer in Ft. Walton had a 2008 Blue one but he wanted full sticker and would not budge.
I found two dealers who would sell for invoice so I just picked the closest one who had the car I wanted. Then I asked them to deliver it at no charge and they did. I paid $43,045 (invoice) sticker was $46,965.
Pay cash if you can but if you finance have it done and the money lined up before you make your offer. Do not try to trade, the dealers are hurting for cash flow, I paid cash with no trade in. If I had really tried I believe I could have eventually bought a 2009 below invoice.
It was fun and I really got even with the dealers for making me wait three years to get one.
Good Luck,
Steve

Sorry for being later here but congrats on the car. You did your homework and you came out ahead. Dealers are going to start trying to get rid of these cars before the 10 models hit the lots plus the economy being in the tubes like it now.
