Chipping on the fender? It happens sometimes. Part of driving the car.

Sure if the design is poor and the debris hits outside the socalled fender flares, I have a cheap Hyundai and not a chip in 5 years on the low fender area!

where behind the front wheels?

My sides are perfect.

Could it be wider front tires throwing up road debris?

That's probably because your Hyundai can hardly spin its skinny tires. Plus, the wider tires will pick up more debris.
