Default (-) door trigger wire functionality?

Hi all,

Can someone help me understand the electrical function of the negative door trigger wire in reference to the map light circuits in the overhead console?

I have the wiring diagram but it doesnt seem to show the full functionality. I would post the schematic but can't. The schematic describes it as the "dome lamp return" that enters the "smart junction box" from the overhead console, but what does it return to? Chassis ground? Is it floating?

Is the relay (switch) depicted in the overhead console box, the two manual buttons in the car that when depressed turn the map lights on no matter what? That seems to make sense. IF that is the case, there must be some switch downstream (or in the SJB) that connects the light green/yellow negative door trigger wire to chassis ground when either door is open right?

Thanks for the help and hopefully this makes sense without the wiring diagram.
