Idle speed and TPS replacement
1986 Mustang GT, 302 H.O., 5 speed tranny
I will be replacing the TPS sensor and resetting the idle in a couple of days. I'm not sure of which one I should do first and in what order.
Can someone tell me which one I should do first?
My timing was set last month, so my timing should be fine, or will disconnecting the battery change my timing?
While adjusting the idle and replacing the TPS sensor, do I need to remove the spout by the distributor?
In order to get a "new start" on the idle speed and TPS adjustment and to get rid of any error codes, should I disconnect the battery, replace the TPS sensor and then make the idle adjustments then the TPS sensor adjustments?
I know the mechanics of it, but I've never done this before and I want to start from a clean slate.

Replace the TPS, and you're done. The only way you need to do adjusting is if the TPS
mount holes are oval, and you can turn it for adjustment. Throttle cable isn't the same as
the drive-by-wire. I have replaced many TPS, and it was out, in, done. The idle air valve
controls the idle when the throttle plate is closed. When you replace the IAC, then all
you do is disconnect the battery, reconnect, start it up and and let idle for 2 minutes in park.
Then press the brake pedal down, put it in gear, and idle another 2 minutes. Turn the A/C
on, still in gear, idle for two minutes.
Looking at the TPS, the holes are not oval, so you're good there:
No room for adjustment there..

I will advise against just swapping a new TPS without first adjusting it to or close the recommended settings of .99 volts.
Any deviations can cause high or erratic idle, it's not hard and doesn't take long at all to do, so do it right.
