Default unit in trunk, drivers side/ sequential lights

Helping a buddy with his 01, trying to fix his sequential rears, one side isn't working.

I did some reading and figured I might be looking for just a harness swap? I found a small box 2 sided taped on the back of the tail light. I'm assuming that's the controller? anything I can fix or is she shot?

Also, there's small metal box fixed to the drivers side, close to the fender. The wiring harness to the tail lights ties into that. Any idea what that might be? Appears stock and the lights still work with it disconnected.

Thanks,

The one controller is probably shot. They're cheaper than the '05+ Harness...

Double check the ground coming out of that control box. I did a dick dance with one of mine for a while before I figured that out.
