Default mustang rears vs cougar rears

ok first off i don`t have a mustang or a cougar but i am working on puttin a fuel injected 5.0 and aod trans in a 50 ford and i had some questions and thought you may be able to help. i bought a parts car a 90 lincoln lsc as a doner for the motor trans and rear. all working good except the rear it`s about 7-8 inches too wide. it is an 8.8 with 3.27 gears.
i don`t know much about fords but i do know i would like to stick with the 8.8 rear or maybe a nine inch.if i do keep with the 8.8 what year and type cars should i be looking for?
i need the rear to measure 56-57 inches wide from wheel mounting surface to wheel mounting surface and be five lug. not concerend wheather or not the control arms line up as i will be running a four link and air bags on it.
also this is a heavy car like 3000 pounds or more so i was wondering if i should be looking for a cougar. i would think they weigh more but i don`t know. also how would i determine the diff between a 7.5 and a 8.8 rear?
