1997 Ford Mustang Cobra SVT 5.4 14.0
2003 Subaru Impreza WRX 5.7 14.4

I am only familiar with the STI's but based on these times it should be an exciting race, mainly because the AWD will sit next to you at the beginning for a bit and then fall back nice and easy
Can you or anyone else tell me more about the Subaru WRX STI? I had a run in with one last night on the Boulevard and it really surprised me. He wouldn't race me from the dig, only on the roll, and it was impressive. He jumped out in front of me about a car, I made up ground be begrudgingly -- foot by foot and barely caught him. He had a big loud mouth muffler and that is about all I could tell. He turned off because the cops were parked near by. So I couldn't talk to him.

I firmly believe that had we raced from the start, I would have devoured him. I was on the tire, with alburn gear, 3:73's, upper and lower control arms along with a built tranny with high stall converter.

I would believe the car was a few years old.

Any info on the STI's in general?

Thanks
Janine

I have all the info about STIs you could ever want. I'm too lazy to post it all though, so if you have any specific questions, fire away! =D

How fast is a stock STI in the 1/4 and 0-60? How heavy are they? Also, how responsive are the engines to modifications? For example, the 03 Cobra will make APPROXIMATELY 22 rwhp simply by adding a K&N filter and up to 48 RWHP just by upgrading exhaust.

Is the STI engine just as responsive? Do they gain big HP just by adding cheap simple mods? I mean, let me tell you, I ran one of them from 30 mph and it exploded on me, took an easy car or two lead. My engine had to work very hard to scratch and claw out a three foot win. I am still thinking about this. Very surprised.

Thanks

First of all, what you raced was far from stock. A stock STi would get blown away by your car from a roll. A stock 05 GT for example would beat one in a roll.

I'm surprised he didn't race you from a dig - that's where they shine. They have LSDs front and rear, with an adjustable center diff. They're capable from dialing 1.8s 60' times stock.

Depends how long the race goes. A 60' race, WRX all the way

At a track I'd say it's an easy win for the Cobra.

And whoever got a 14.0 time for a 32V cobra can't drive for ****.

They weigh around 3300lbs. They run mid 13s at the very best in stock form IIRC and 0-60 is right around 5 seconds. The STI you raced was probably heavily modified to keep up with your setup. It is definitely NOT easy nor cheap to gain horsepower out of the EJ25 motor. Probably the easiest and most popular power adders people do is a full exhaust upgrade and engine management + custom tune. For around $2500 that will get an STI over 300whp (~60-70whp over stock) and put it into the high 12s with a good driver. After that, you pretty much require extensive fuel system and turbo / intercooler upgrades to see big gains. At that point, the sky is the limit (until you crack a piston ring .... *AHEM* )

The stock STI block, no matter what anyone will try to tell you, is really not reliable at 400whp. You're really running on borrowed time when you're pushing the motor that hard. A lot of people looking for serious power out of these cars will upgrade to forged pistons and such; I just took it a step further and replaced the entire motor for something with more displacement and WAY more strength.

It is still a pretty impressive motor for a 4 banger ^_^
