The stock STI block, no matter what anyone will try to tell you, is really not reliable at 400whp.
Stock block or stock bottom end? 'cause that is pretty weak. SRT4s for example, have gone over 600 hp on stock block (with fully built internals).

Sorry I was not very clear. The stock STI block is not the weak point, it is the pistons and piston rings. With fully forged internals and such you could push a lot more power reliably than the stock setup.

My new longblock was actually born as a USDM STI 2.5L and has been bored and fully built up to be something altogether completely different ^_^

How fast is a stock STI in the 1/4 and 0-60? How heavy are they? Also, how responsive are the engines to modifications? For example, the 03 Cobra will make APPROXIMATELY 22 rwhp simply by adding a K&N filter and up to 48 RWHP just by upgrading exhaust.

Is the STI engine just as responsive? Do they gain big HP just by adding cheap simple mods? I mean, let me tell you, I ran one of them from 30 mph and it exploded on me, took an easy car or two lead. My engine had to work very hard to scratch and claw out a three foot win. I am still thinking about this. Very surprised.

Thanks
Janine
They weigh around 3300lbs. They run mid 13s at the very best in stock form IIRC and 0-60 is right around 5 seconds. The STI you raced was probably heavily modified to keep up with your setup. It is definitely NOT easy nor cheap to gain horsepower out of the EJ25 motor. Probably the easiest and most popular power adders people do is a full exhaust upgrade and engine management + custom tune. For around $2500 that will get an STI over 300whp (~60-70whp over stock) and put it into the high 12s with a good driver. After that, you pretty much require extensive fuel system and turbo / intercooler upgrades to see big gains. At that point, the sky is the limit (until you crack a piston ring .... *AHEM* )

The stock STI block, no matter what anyone will try to tell you, is really not reliable at 400whp. You're really running on borrowed time when you're pushing the motor that hard. A lot of people looking for serious power out of these cars will upgrade to forged pistons and such; I just took it a step further and replaced the entire motor for something with more displacement and WAY more strength.

It is still a pretty impressive motor for a 4 banger ^_^
3300 lbs is not too much heaver than a Stang. Yet a stock STI will run 0-60 in 5 flat and 1/4 in about 13.5. I believe firmly believe this. I find it amazing that this car can run quick with far less HP than a Mustang. In all honesty, it took my Stang 328 RWHP to hit those speed numbers. I would venture to say that a Stock STI would put out perhaps 258 RWHP? That is a 70 rwhp difference with a close weight factor.

Then, on top of that, it takes only $2500 for another 70 rwhp. In that regard, the power to speed gains in the STI should be absolutely off the chart.

Everyone I know calls them "Rice Cookers" There is nothing to knock about the STI. I will not take them for granted again.

Thanks for your information.

*looks at your sig*

*looks back at that line*

Nanaki: Please explain what you meant by this?

hav you shouldn't have a problem with the wrx assuming you can drive.

janine i still don't think you have grasped the damn point here[&o]...if a sti stayed anywhere near your stang especially from a roll it was modded to HELL AND BACK and they are NOT cheap to make fast....but then again seeing how much money you spent for "only" 460whp you would think 2500 bucks for 70whp (on a factory sc/turbo car) is cheap ZING!!!

Janine, dont think I'm hating on you or anything, but you ran a new Vette with cams, but a WRX STI beat you by 3 feet? That does seem fishy to me, but you never know these days.

Depends how long the race goes. A 60' race, WRX all the way

At a track I'd say it's an easy win for the Cobra.

And whoever got a 14.0 time for a 32V cobra can't drive for ****.
SN 95 cobra's were rated right at 14 flat from the factory.. 13.99 actualy and you almost never see a bone stock SN go faster then a 13.9.. hoping to put my car in the mid-low 13's next time out..

Ohh.. and for those to lazy to read the other thread/watch videos.. it was a rape.
