Well, my '88 vert is a 5 speed. Not sure how relevant it is in these yesterday/today bench racing sessions, but the only car of the day that could hold its own against me stock for stock was the vette. I would cream them off the line, but they usually would beat me at the top end.

Yes, I too had an '88 GT hatchback that I bought new while I was in the Navy and stationed in Orlando. We took it to the local track on an evening in July and I ran 14.7's all night while spinning badly. On my last run after the air began to cool down a bit, I hooked up hard on the line and miraculously ran a 14.34 @ 96.15 mph bone stock!
The 5 speed is what makes all the difference. You're probably only a couple of tenths slower than the hatchback at most. And, yes, in 1988 only Vettes and the later Grand Nationals (and of course those pesky LX 5.0's
) could run with us...
